A recent article on Mother Jones claims that multi-tasking is a much more difficult skill than many people believe. The theory is based on research testing one's abilities to identify varying shapes and images to determine whether irrelevant information can actually be filtered. The findings: tuning out the irrelevant is much harder than we think.
I'd probably agree. But I'd like to think I am somewhat skilled at tuning out some of the irrelevant. The most irrelevant. Maybe I feel like I can prioritize my distractions. Some things are worth the distractions, even if they are irrelevant. Like, for example, stopping to read this article and then posting about it!
If I couldn't tune most the irrelevant out, though...well, then there's no explanation as to how I ever do any real work each day!
